Have lost count of the number of times I've grabbed lunch to go from here. And in all of those times I have yet to venture past their daily special. Honestly their standard menu doesn't have a lot outside the standard stuff, but their daily sandwich is almost always interesting. Usually pair that with one of the soup of the day options, upsized, and it makes a good, cheap meal to share for lunch. Take advantage of their Yelp deal in conjunction with their buy 5 get 1 free deal on soup for your freezer stash. Their Oktoberfest soup is our favorite thus far.

Oh man. Love this place. It's a bit pricey, but it's well worth it. I usually order two full sandwiches and eat off it for a couple days. Lanasa is legit. DeForest Pork is too. French Onion is the only soup I've ordered and was good. Fries are outstanding as well. Always have ordered delivery.

I work on a major tv show with a large crew, our craft services brought us some sandwiches from Starship. Or, "StarShits" as we call it now, 39 people got food poisoning, including myself. At least one went to the hospital and it crippled production for a couple days after. The symptoms of those who got sick were of food poisoning, approx 24 hrs after eating the contaminated food we were vomiting non stop and explosive diarrhea that lasted about two days. Then nothing. We all got sick simultaneously. The only people who got sick were those who ate the sandwiches and everyone that ate the sandwiches got sick. Craft services picks up the food and immediately delivers it to set to be eaten, it does not sit. The word is Starship didn't take responsibility because they don't handle the food after its picked up. What a joke.

You can eat there every day for a month, and never have the same soup twice. I have tried about 20 of their 200+ soups. The steak sandwich is to die for. I highly recommend trying this place.

If you are looking for incredible soup, this is the place to go! Their selection changes daily, but they always have a wide array of frozen ones in their freezer. The staff is friendly and welcoming and always eager to help make your food delicious. The atmosphere is a little outdated, but it has a fun, kitschy vibe.

My first taste of a sub from here was at work. My employer catered Starship sub boxes for a company meeting. I'm scared to say it, but it was the best sub I have had in the last 10 years. So I made it my mission to check this place out solo to see if I grabbed a good sub box at my company meeting. On my visit I decided to go simple even after reviewing Yelp reviews of this place. I ordered the 6 inch turkey sub. The best sub. I can't rant enough how good the sub was. I grabbed a bag of chips as well and my total was about $6. I'm not a Star Wars fan so this didn't wow me at all. Honestly, from reading the reviews I was expecting to walk into something overwhelming, but it was not. I received great service from the staff and was given details about items that I was considering purchasing. Right now there is construction on The block of this place so you have to park in the back of the place, walk through a gangway to get to the front door. Initially, my thoughts of inconvenience flooded my mind, but once I tasted my sub, it was worth it. I will definitely be a regular here moving forward.

Speaking of being nerdy or doing nerdy things, hubby and I definitely are in the club. While the Starship Restaurant has some appealing star treks decors and memorabilia, the food here gotta be the real deal. Otherwise, a gentle nerd can potentially become an angry nerd. Well, we the nerds were certainly blissful this evening because the food was delicious! We were surprised that the portions of the meal combo were generous. My "killer cod combo" on the special menu came with the choice of soup or salad. I had the New England clam chowder. Oh, did I mention that I came with bread and crackers as well? The clam chowder had great flavor and didn't skimp on meat and clams. I sampled hubby's tomato rice soup, and it was comforting, savory, and hearty. Although winter is coming to the end, and the prelude of spring season is right around the corner, Rosa J. is always up for a cup of well-crafted soup at any time of the day. Everything appeared to be made-to-order. It really made hubby's day when he had the egg salad with the rye bread (rye and pumpernickel breads are his favorite). Furthermore, I'm impressed that they have home-made chips, and those were well-done and flavored appropriately. Nothing makes Rosa J. happy when she has her seafood fix. The cod sandwich was satisfying and had the right ratio of tarter sauce and toppings to hold the sandwich together without having pickles epically falling off the buns. By the way, did I sound nerdy enough for this review? Even though it's a "short-order" type of establishment, the young lady rendered very friendly service and volunteered to provide two (2) cups of water without us requesting for them. This is one of the many gems at the downtown Forest Park. Who will go to the McDonald's down the road? The answer is negative, my captain, because nerds rule!

When my friends mother passed away, I was able to have Starship deliver 6 kinds of their frozen soup and bread so that she didn't have to think about dinner. And I've had Starship deliver soup to sick friends too. THIS has been a super valuable service - I can't believe how great a service this is. It's homemade soup delivery when I can't be there to do it myself. Thanks Starship.

Such a fun place. My first experience with Starship was Christmas 2011. My son from Forest Park, IL visited us while we lived in VT. He brought us Starship Jerk Marinade and jarred veggie relish. Well, this stuff was excellent! After moving back to the Midwest, I had the chance to walk down the cute Madion Street lined with businesses in Forest Park, IL. We walked up to the red building with the Starship sign on the outside. It is a bit like going back in time with the decor from the past. Star Trek decor that is! I am a Star Trek fan and didn't know that was the idea around "Starship" until I walked in. It was fun inside. I very much enjoyed it. I had the THE STARFISH (Per the menu - Our homemade tuna salad on a sesame seed bun. Complimented with eggs, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, and pickles). I also got the pizza bread for an appetizer. It was a lot of food. So, my son and I (he also got the starfish), ate the pizza bread, a few bites of the sandwich and then saved the rest for dinner... We didn't make it to dinner though before eating it all :) I want to go back an try the homemade soups - they even make some in large containers to go. If you are going to be close by, this is a place to try. It is one of the unique restaurants that we need more of!

Starships were meant to fly, hands up and touch the sky! Hands up to give this place 2 big high fives! The Star Wars and Star Trek memorabilia is definitely cool and adds to the sandwich shop. That's not the selling point though. The food is incredible. And well priced. I've eaten there about a half dozen times now and every single time I've asked myself how it could be this good for this price. Everything is great. I don't know what to recommend first. The Starship is great, the Reuben is excellent. Get the Wild Turkey Melt on special if you can. The soups are better than any soup deserves to be. On Sunday's you can get free chili with your sandwich! This place is easily in the top 5 best restaurants in Forest Park. Edit// forgot to mention the fries are great too. They are a bit thicker than I care for, but well cooked, crispy, and well seasoned.

My husband and I came here for dinner..looking for sandwich and soup. It was really quiet on a Saturday evening. I am guessing it is more of a take-out place since it was just my husband and I along with another customer dining. There were few people coming in and out to pick up their food though. This is a customized restaurant where it features Star Trek and lots of klingon stuff.. I'm not too big into sci-fi but it was kind of cool. It makes the cafe a bit unusual, and definitely different than other sandwich cafes. As for the food, it is okay. I ordered the crazy club sandwich and a side of egg salad. My husband ordered their mexican chicken soup and another sandwich that I forgot the name. We both ordered the half size...which was already pretty big! I was very surprised..it is 6 inches, but it is very tall. It definitely filled us up! The sandwich is okay..I like Submarine Tender much more.. the bread is a bit coarse so it scratched the top of my mouth a little bit. The salad was decent. The soup was really good. They also have frozen soups that you can buy from their freezer and reheat at home. My husband and I ended up buying a chicken noodle and seafood/corn chowder. Each cost $5 which I found to be pretty expensive for soup. Overall, this is a decent, average sandwich place. I would say they are better with the soup than sandwich. Service is good. The staff taking our orders were really nice.

I was in a bind for a last minute catering order for my work. I called around 2pm (for a 6:30 delivery), on one of the coldest days of the year so far. I had no idea what to order and just wanted to be done with the entire process since it was such a busy day at work. Paul was VERY helpful in coming up with a menu to fit my group's needs. He suggest a lot of items and I was worried about what the total would be. He e-mailed me an invoice so I could see everything and the price was half what I thought it would be! The food was delicious, the delivery was outstanding...all in all, Starship saved the day and lived up to their outstanding reviews. My mom uses them all the time for catering and now I see why. Thanks Starship!

Whoa! They actually use bacon on their sandwiches, not that microwaveable excuse for bacon. The portions here are huge. My husband I split a sandwich. Absolutely delicious. The only thing I didn't like too much were their homemade chips. They were slightly over cooked, but had they not been, they would've been amazing too. Still a really good place to check out.

Even if your not a Star Trek fan, this place has the best subs. Generous portions of meat and all the fixings. Call for the soups of the day before you go. I still have yet to find a soup I didn't like. This place is an easy 5 stars

I really enjoy the soup from Starship. It's perfect for a cloudy cold day. There's a large variety and at least 4 "soups of the day" I work right around the corner from there, so it's super convenient and delivery is always really quick for us at the office. I was going to give Starship three stars, but I had to boost it to four because holy cow! I just had their Escarole soup-- it was so delicious I can't even express enough how much I enjoyed it! Lovelovelove it! Anyway, Their subs are pretty decent. I've never been completely "wow"ed by them. Basic lunch meat on most of them. I've never have their hot sandwich selections, so that's on my list of items to try. I do love their soups though; every one I've had has been fantastic.

Went here for the first time yesterday after noticing it a couple of years ago. I was very disappointed with the food although, the service was good. I ordered a strawberry milkshake, french onion soup, grilled cheese sandwich, and seasoned fries. The milkshake was good, made with fresh strawberries according to the guy at the counter. The French onion soup was extremely salty! I enjoy salt in my food, but the high salt content made it difficult to even eat, it was awful. My grilled cheese was okay, I don't know what kind of bread they used, but not adequate for a grilled cheese....which, by the way, was not even really grilled, it was more like melted cheese between two slices of bread. The fries were tasty, just a little on the greasy side. The best part if my entire meal was the milkshake. I would not go back to that place again.

When I'm working from home or home sick I always call Starship's soup hotline (708-366-SOUP) to hear their daily soup and sandwich specials. I almost always get one of the special sandwiches and a side of soup. I saw a couple other reviews mentioned the Wild Turkey Melt special, I agree this is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had so get that if they have it! It's peppered turkey with a chipotle sauce and cheese melted on this incredible bread, I asked one of the workers where the bread was from and they said it was from Turano. I've never had a bad soup from here and love the variety! I only wish they had good old Chicken Noodle every day during the winter. Great Food & Great Service, love this place!

Oh...wow.... I have driven past Starship so many times, yet only tried their food for the first time this past fall when they catered a meeting I attended. I really regret not trying it sooner! The minestrone soup is to die for, and you can even fill your freezer with the frozen soups for sale! I haven't tried their sammiches, but probably will sometime soon. The nerdy stuff on the walls is a huge plus, especially the K-9 picture :-D

  • Lindsey E.

Look beyond the sci-fi decor and the unassuming exterior, and you'll enjoy some fantastic soups and tasty sandwiches! The soup selection is epic and homemade. If they're not serving your favorite when you're in for lunch, you can pick up a container of any of their flavors from their freezer case and take it home with you. They even have a buy 5, get 1 free deal on their frozen soups, which makes a nice way to stock up on inexpensive lunch options! If you're a soup-lover like I am, be sure to give this place a chance!

Been eating at Starship for over 20+ years and have been at too many events to count over the years where they catered (graduations, funerals, birthdays, St. Pats, Mardi-Gras party - weddings YES THEY ARE THAT GOOD). I am a local and folks here know them so no surprise to see them catering EVERYWHERE. I love the food, the staff are hard working and smile at you! AND by the way - have never had any problems. I'm writing this review because of the dude below blaming Starship on their food poisoning. I heard they had the flu (it happened during a major outbreak in Chicago) from other folks that worked on that set (it was also local) and they were sick before the food even got there. How can they blame these guys - they obviously don't know STARSHIP!

I like this place and want to support local businesses over chain restaurants. I like their Crazy Club and love the soups they have made fresh daily as well as the frozen too. If you are in the area, I highly recommend them!

I got a new job, where did I go for meal after my first check? Starship. The sandwiches are wonderful and creative. I had a meatball and bowl of chili. The chili is sort of sweet/hot which wrks for me. Chili is very personal though. Everyone there is always really friendly, and I mean they are nice and pay attention to you at the counter. I was in a Walgreens recently and the clerk was chatting with a co worker and didn't even acknowledge me while I was paying...... There is a bad review of this place and I don't get it, I have never had stale bread or anything not good here. The soup, IN PARTICULAR ranges from good to excellent . The sandwiches are packed with meat, just a great place to eat. The owner always says hi when he is there....

    (5)
  • Peter A.

Delicious. Their soups are 'soup nazi' good and their sandwiches are tasty too. Their Reuben and meatball are usually my go to along with a steamy bowl of whatever they're serving. I just ordered their Irish Stew with chunks of lamb. 'Jambalaya!'

**FULL DISCLOSURE** I've never actually been inside Starship, but eaten their food many times. They cater a lot of events around Oak Park and River Forest, and they always bring out really good food. We've had sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, and other picnic food maybe a dozen times in the last 12 months, and never had a bad meal. Keep on keepin' on!

I must have come on an off day or something because this place has so many good reviews. I ordered the french onion soup and it was SO salty. It was honestly inedible and I'm not particularly picky about stuff being over salted. This soup was so salty I still can't believe it was served.

I am so excited that we finally tried Starship and I will be back! We were feeling under-the-weather and wanted soup. A Yelp search of "soup" near "Oak Park" led me to Starship, a place we had heard good things about but had never tried. One of the five soups on the menu today was Cream of Jerk Chicken. Salty, but AWESOME. We also ordered a Chicken Caesar salad (very good and incredibly filling), the Crazy Club Sub, and the Deforest Pork Sun - both sandwiches were worthy of repeating and incredibly filling (we ordered the half size and split it between a couple adults and a kid and had more leftover). And if it isn't enough that the food was QUALITY and substantial for a very reasonable price, the customer service is fantastic. I was there just before a dinner rush and one of the young men behind the counter volunteered to carry my bag down the block to the car for me (I was holding a baby and leading a toddler) and was incredibly friendly. Looking forward to trying more on the menu and probably ordering catering as well.

UPDATED 6/26: I have been using Starship for our company lunches every month since January and I cannot praise them enough! The variety of food that they offer blows everyone away. To date we have had the following theme buffets: Island Gala, Hungry Man Breakfast, Mardi Gras, Mexican Fiesta, Soul Food Each one has been enjoyed by everyone in our company and we have people of all ages and cultures. Every month the food is raved about for days afterwards and there are never any leftovers! This past month our company had an after-hours BBQ and of course I called Paul @ Starship and he worked out a menu with me to get what we wanted, down to having someone grill for us. Paul and his staff are awesome. They arrive on time, the food is hot and ready to serve and they do a complete set up. Paul is extremely easy to work with and does everything he can to make sure that every detail is worked out and nothing is missed. Not to mention that the prices are EXTREMELY reasonable. My co-workers are always amazed at what Starship delivers every month, since it's known for being just a sandwich shop. But it is so much more! I try to tell everyone that I can how highly I can recommend Starship for any event no matter what size and budget you have. I am telling you : the next time you need food for a party or even a small gathering at your home, CALL STARSHIP! You will NOT be disappointed!!

Good sandwiches and ... they deliver! Great soups and things too, the soups are wonderful for catering or just to get for lunch. Not too bad on price either, the decor is really neat. Reminds me of an old Sci Fi movie from the 60s.

Delicious subs. The bread and tons of meat and cheese were delicious. The six inch is more than enough for one person. There's a cooler full of soups that has over twenty varieties that I can't wait to go back and try.

Starship is wonderful. Their soup is like my grandma would have made it if she would have been a better cook. It is amazing soup. My daughter can hardly ever eat any restaurant food because she has an autoimmune disease that causes her to be allergic to the top 8 allergens, including wheat, soy, milk, and eggs among others. We found some soup that did not list any of her allergens in the list of ingredients. They must run a tight ship with a clean kitchen because there was no cross contamination. If there had been, she would have had facial swelling and possibly could have required her Epipen-- but no! She felt wonderful! The soup (oxtail soup) not only tasted wonderful... It was actually healing for her. It was so rich in nutrients and fresh ingredients that her normal brain fog cleared and she said she felt stronger. I am glad I have found several other kinds of soup that she can eat at Starship. Now we have a place to go to for lunch together! Previously, the only "safe" meal she could have out at a restaurant was a steak at a steakhouse made carefully to order...which was monotonous for her and expensive for us. I am filling my freezer with soups from Starship for my daughter. I'm a pretty good soup maker, but these soups have far more layers of flavor than my homemade soups have, and they have a lot more variety. This place is like the 31 Flavors of soup! I could never keep our freezer stocked with this variety of high quality soups if I had to make them all myself. One other note for allergy sufferers: The owner told me that they don't add the noodles to their soups until an order is placed to keep the noodles from overcooking, so if you can't have wheat, you can order a soup and ask them to hold the noodles. That means that my daughter can either choose to have these soups without the noodles, or I can bring some home and add her allergy free noodles at home. This opens up even more soup options for my daughter. On top of all of this, I have to add that the employees have been beyond helpful the three times I have eaten there. It's like service used to be back in the day. They treated me right and I will be back.

"Starships were meant to fly." "Hands up and touch the sky." I think Nicki Minaj was singing about starship restaurant. This review is a little overdue, but better late than never! My job ordered some sandwiches for us from Starship. Starship? I've never heard of such a place. Everybody kept on talking about the crazy club sub. So I tried one of those and the starship sandwich. Now these sandwiches were good. I don't feel like describing what's in them (menu is online). The bread was soft and not so chewy to the point of it hurting your saw. All the ingredients were fresh and worked perfectly together. You must venture out to Forest Park to get a yummy sandwich.

Shining the spotlight here on Starship Forest Park event catering: Dear Paul, I cannot begin to express our appreciation. Food, delivery service spot on despite downtown traffic, presentation was especially top-notch & so fitting for a spectacular North Michigan Avenue Opera!!! We had just under a 100 people with a bit of food to spare. I let Paul decide the menu with my budget in mind- I'll take it upon myself to name my order: "Starship Classical Event Package". I've been a steady, happy customer for decades, but this totally surpassed any expectations. Did I mention this was a promo video shoot? I was only able to give Starship staff less than 2 days to prepare. Thanks again to everyone @ Starship Restaurant! BRAVO!!!!!

Ok I thought this place was a joke at first. I have walked by it many times, and believe me kept walking. One day the voice of reason (my wife) said I should not be so judgmental; so it was a little off; what is my problem. I had to then explain to my wife that I am not a Star Trek person, I am a fan of Dr Who, and the cultural differences are obvious, and it should be obvious why I would judge, and why I could not like this food. I was then kicked in the shin, and we went in, it was worse than I thought, Trek madness everywhere i looked. I just new some clown in a stupid outfit was going to speak to me is some made up language, then he was going to get punched in the mouth. The police would then come, I would go jail, shank a rival, become a sinister prison overlord, use my power to threaten a parole board, be released, and then rule over the village with a swift hammer of street justice, make my wife cry, have children run in fear, and become the scourge of humanity. Thankfully none of this happened, a nice young lady in normal clothes asked me if I have ever been here before, and she could help me. Boy could she help me, let's start with the fact that I love soup. One of my favorite things in the world, and this place had so very much of it. Oh the wonderful soup, so much soup, everywhere soup. They let me try everything, all the soup, I could try all the soup. Everything is made from scratch, you can see them cooking it up, not to mention the 20 odd frozen ones in the freezer you can take home for later. They always have 5 or 6 fresh that day, and you can pair them with a nice samich. There is a good deal of Trek business, but do not let that get in your way of the amazing things these folks are cooking up. great food, great prices, friendly people, home cooked, local. get it.

You cant go wrong with the retro fun atmosphere and the super deal on subs and soup. I dont think the decor has changed in years. I felt like I was transported back 20 years to my highschool days. Since the decor is Star trek and the like type stuff perhaps this is exactly the feeling they were going for. It certainly was a sparkly modern restaurant...but that's cool. I got a mini sub (4"), a brownie, a small bowl of soup and a frozen soup to go for $13! what a deal. I think this will be my new go to place when Im broke...or just want good soup, which is always.

Sandwiches were ok, but the soup & homemade chips were awesome! I got a fried fish sandwich & the girlfriend got a burger, both pretty standard, pretty blah. But the lentil soup was delicious & the homemade potato chips were light & airy & not too greasy. Next time I'll try a sub & get it to go. The interior's dingy & it was weird to be the only people there on a Friday night.

Where are these 5-star reviews coming from? This place is falling apart. The 'decor' is worn, faded, poorly placed.... huge cracks in the floor tiles... a freezer that runs so loudly you can't hear yourself think. All around poor upkeep of what is supposed to be unique about this place. The food is edible, but Starship is obviously hurting. My advice to the owners: pick a theme and remodel the dining room completely. It's a confused, ragged, uninviting mess... this is coming from a Trek fan.

  • Judd O.

I was pretty stoked to go here after reading reviews, and my girlfriend really likes Star Trek. I was a little underwhelmed by the atmosphere... some of the decor was cool but the Star Wars streamers by the register were a bit tacky. The Ups: The young woman who took our order at the register was very nice and accommodating. She was very nice to other customers and told a lady who ordered a sandwich and chips that getting a combo was more affordable. I love when people do that. Anyhow- I ordered the voodoo chicken "done right" and tater tots and my girlfriend got a grilled cheese. Her grilled cheese was awesome. It might seem like you can't mess up a grilled cheese but believe me. We have had messed up grilled cheeses. It was hot and the cheese was melted, the bread was crispy but not overly greasy. The tater tots were super crispy and delicious. The Downs: My chicken "done right" was actually a little pink, so I had to refrain from eating a part of it. The chicken was also under seasoned and had no flavor at all. There wasn't a lot of sauce either. The voodoo house sauce was pretty good though. The place doesn't seem very clean, but isn't extremely dirty either. I had a pleasant time. The girl at the register was eating soup between swiping a customer's card and waiting for the card to go through. It puts me off a bit to see people eating on the floor. The massive frozen soup selection appeared to be refrigerated and not frozen but I may be mistaken. The service was also a little slow and the place was not packed at all. ALL IN ALL I like the place and have high hopes for it. I will definitely give it another chance. I realize I'm being a bit harsh on a laid-back, feel good restaurant that is all about customer service... but it's because I know they can do better.

First time ordering from Starship and was unimpressed with the delivery service and food. I wait over an hour and a half for my order to be delivered and my soup which I was looking forward to having based on previous reviews was ice cold. The food over all was just average and not worth the long wait.

I've been working in Forest Park for a little over a month now and I'm still unfamiliar with the area. Once I became brave enough to break away from the franchises in the neighborhood, I gave Starship the first shot to see what this town can cook up. Good stuff! Never had a lousy lunch, eat here about twice a week. I think the Deforest Pork is the best on the menu sandwich while their Turkey ruben is their best off the menu one. As far as soups go, again they are all fantastic. Solid French onion, can't get tired of it, and I also love the gumbo. Oh, and great shakes too.

The cream of chicken soup was delicious. The veggie sandwich was gross, though. The vegetables were cut oddly and the bread was soggy.

I've eaten most everything on Starship's menu through the years, but my go-to choices have usually been: The Starship, The Crazy Club Sub, and The Lanasa. Those sandwiches have always been delicious - incredibly delicious - and they still are. Sometimes the bacon on The Crazy Club Sub could be more well-done, but I prefer crispier bacon. And I do remember when they used to toast the top of the bread when a sandwich was ordered, thereby giving the sesame seeds a nutty flavor; I'd like them to bring that back... The Italian Beef is really flavorful and moist, but I think the bun is too squishy/fluffy, and not crispy/crunchy enough. I have not had the Sausage in years, but I remember that it had good flavor and looked different from any sausage I had ever eaten. The Seasoned Fries are tasty, if a bit salty, so use some condiments on them. I had a delicious bowl of soup here once, but I don't remember which it was. I've had the Chocolate-Banana Shake, and the Strawberry-Banana Shake, and they are always great; very creamy and fluffy. The thing is... Starship opened in 1977. It always was a neighborhood 'joint'. A simple place with great food and friendly people. I've been here with my Grandma. I've been here with my Mom. I've been here with friends. I've had Starship catering several times. So... They closed Starship in 1987 for about 5 months for renovations. Those renovations sucked the 'joint' right out of the place. Since the 1987 renovation, there has been an inescapable echo in Starship; an inescapable echo that is made worse by the hum of the cooler motors. The music they play is radio-station music...uh, not good. C'mon guys, program your own selections, or try online streaming or satellite radio. I wish that they'd consider some modern renovations - grab a copy of Architectural Record and start planning... Starship's food is too great, and the people are too cool for them to not remake a great 'joint'.

I have been eating at this place for close to a year now. At first this place was awsome, for 12-14 dollars you would get this huge massive sammich that was stacked and loaded. Very filling if you are a hearty eater like myself. Then one day it's like the sammich's got smaller and smaller and the price was the same. Figured I give them one more try, last week I went there with a friend and we ordered one of the big sammich's they have. When it was brought over to us we both looked at it and saw like four little pieces of meat in it. WTH. Now for 12+ dollars you now get this joke of a sammich compared to how it was a few months back. Seems like they are hurting with $$$. If they clean up the place and add some better decorations they would get more customers coming in. It's called invest in your business not just yourself. Currently looking for a new sammich joint that makes some big, tasty sammichs. Dear Starship, please come back from the Dark Side and make the sammichs you used to make several months ago. You made sammichs for big dudes, now do it. Aaron

"I'm HUNGRY!" J.Kuei, being the good host he was to an always hungry, cold and quivering born-and-raised Californian (more precisely, LA-er), came back during his lunch break to take my poor, shivering ass to Starship to eat before he had to go back to med schooling. We checked. . what else, but Yelp, before deciding to head here for the measly hour he had inbetween classes. We parked on the street and as I walked up to the place, I noticed a big "KLINGON X-ING" Sign . . . ohhh so that's why this place is called Starship!! sidenote: What I noticed about a lot of Chicago restaurants is that the ventilation isn't very good. I'm assuming it's because the insulation which helps keep the cold air out unfortunately keeps smoke and other kitchen smells in. I walked out of the place emitting grilled meat smell. But I didn't mind because the sandwiches were HUGE and effin delicious. We were both confused about the sizing of the sandwiches - why is a half sandwich 5 bucks but a whole sandwich 10? Okay, so here's the deal - a half sandwich is basically a foot long, and the whole sandwich is like a two footer. I think I could've just gotten a mini (half a foot long) and been good, but the other half made for a good snack later. J.Kuei got the starfish sandwich (tuna salad on a sesame seed bun. Complimented with eggs, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, and pickles) and I got the Starship (imported ham, turkey, bologna, cheddar & swiss cheese with fresh vegetables layered into a soft sesame seed bun) along with a cup of the french onion soup. The french onion soup was pretty good. . the cheese was bubbling brown and enveloped the soup cup, whose oniony broth was just what I needed to warm up. It paired nicely with my sandwich, which I devoured half of in a matter of seconds. Even though I thought there was a little bit too much cheese, I loved the bread, which was soft and fresh and the proportion of meat to veggies to carbs was perfect! I would eat here everyday if I could - this place is cheap eats and good food. Starship beats Subway any day - now only if they would open one up in LA. . .

I just had the cheesy beef sandwich last night, which was not their best sandwich, but definitely serviceable. I have never been disappointed by any of their soups. The french onion soup definitely holds its own. The cream of chicken and rice is probably my favorite, while the baked potato soup is also a pretty decent option. My favorite sandwiches are the meatball and the Jefferson Starship (Reuben). The Reuben is one of the better Reubens that I've tasted... melted cheese, meat, and toasted marble rye.... yummm. I highly recommend starship for its homemade style soups and sandwiches. Lots of people complain about the cheesy atmosphere, but the food is worth the visit. Take your food home if you don't like random space figurines watching you eat.

This is a funky little sandwich shop with some weird decor and great food -- at least based on what we tried! I visited with a friend before the Elite event in River Forest, and it was just right for a light dinner. We each got a "mini" sandwich, which let me tell you, that ain't no tiny sandwich. The whole sandwiches have got to be 18 inches, so a mini is about... 5, maybe? Anyway, great bread, piled high with yummy meats (or tons of veggies and cheese, for my vegetarian friend) and dripping with oil and vinegar (so you might want to specify if you want less or none). I also had a cup of chili. It was a pretty good sized cup, and came with crackers and a roll. It was quite tasty, with big chunks of tomato and a hearty, slightly spicy flavor (though my sandwich had peppers on it, so it was a little hard to differentiate). Service was basic but friendly, and I give them props for letting me sit there for half an hour waiting without glaring at me or hassling me to order something. I have no idea if I'll be back in Forest Park anytime soon, but I am glad to recommend Starship for people in need of delicious sandwiches and hearty soups.

So I've been living in Forest Park for six years and I finally warped into this place. I have always wanted to go, mission accomplished. I requested their best sub sandwich. They delivered the Starship Fleet. I was pleasantly surprised of how much meat was on the sub for just five dollars. Oh yeah, don't get a large unless you want to take some home, or you've starved yourself for a week. Top if off with some homemade chili, presto-Yes Captain Krik I will return to eat your sub sandwiches and might try another one of your 150 soups. A great value for fresh food. Can't wait to come back!

Had the special of the day, a meatloaf sandwich with fries. Good meatloaf in a wonderfully crunchy toasted hoagy. The bread wasn't so chewy that it was hard to eat with the thick slab of meatloaf but not so toasted that it wouldn't fall apart when you picked it up. The fries were great, but far too salty. The sandwich was also served with the made-in-house potato chips which were also pretty good but too salty. A solid meal at an okay price. ONE BIG WARNING: Watch the expediter plate your food. Mine was running around with one glove on, and using that gloved hand to hold the plate while she put chips on with the ungloved hand. Luckily she left the kitchen the order before mine.

Visited Starship for the first time when my Grandson graduated from preschool. We made it a luncheon celebration for him and six immediate relatives. Had an awesome time. Food was great and included both hot and cold sandwiches and three of the homemade soups offered that day. The owner and employees were fantastic. They delivered the orders quickly and checked with us on several occasions to make sure all was going well. We had a celebration cake with us and they even provided small plates and forks for us too! The sandwiches included the meatball and steak sandwiches as well as the tomato basil, corn chowder and jambaya soup. Everything was very, very tasty!.. They even ensured the salad order was gluten and dairy free for the graduates Mom! The owner and employees made this important day for the 5 year old graduate a great day! Thanks Starship!!!!!!!!!

Went here with a friend for lunch over the weekend. I was craving soup and she suggested this place because she remembered walking by it several times before as it's very close to her house. She had never been there either. When we walked in, it was very retro looking. Reminded me of Super Dawg in Evanston. Kind of feels like a small hot dog shop in there, but what you get for the value is just stellar! I ordered the cream of potato soup and house salad combo with ranch dressing. The combo meal comes with a fountain drink and total is $8. Similar in price to Portillo's, but you really get a lot more bang for your buck here. The soup which I thought would be a really small serving was huge! I could only eat half of it (and it was creamy, potatoie and delicious!), and their salad dressing was phenominal! The salad is really big! I was expecting something way smaller than what I got. I felt like I ate so much, but I only ate maybe 1/4 of my salad and had to take it home. I am addicted to their ranch dressing though. It's the best I've ever had hands down. My friend ordered the cream of potato soup and sandwich combo for same price as mine. She ate the whole soup, but only could down a bite of her sandwich and a couple of their house-made chips. She tried the chips in my salad dressing and wished she could have more, but she was stuffed! We agreed this was our new get-together-for-lunch place when I go to visit her. They advertize that they also serve breakfast!!!

I work fairly close so every break I have that I'm hungry, Starship gets a phone call! I actually have their phone number saved in my phone hehe. I always get the turkey cheap but good. Its around $5 for the sandwich and a soda.Their soups are sooo good as well! My boyfriend does the buy 5 (frozen soups) get the 6th free all the time. Their Resurrection chicken soup is a suggested hangover cure! I cant handle the spicy but i hear it does wonders :). I've never had anything there I didn't like and I've never heard complaints. Overall good place

So, my querida has been telling me about this place for a while now (it's close to her place), and so we decided to stop in for lunch today. We're both, to varying degrees, a little on the sci-fi nerd side of life, so the appeal of this would exist regardless of the quality of the food. I mean, how can you not love a place that's full of all kinds of Star Trek and Star Wars knick knacks? They've even got the signage to prove out outside - the way in involves a "Klingon Crossing" road sign. Not for the faint of heart. Fortunately, the theme (and the fun) don't stop with the decor. The menu is full of great names such as the "Deforest Pork" sandwich. Incidentally, that's what I ordered, and it was a heck of a good roast pork sandwich - perfect sub bread (enough crust to give it some bite, but soft and chewy past that), juicy and flavorful pork, cheese, tomato, onion, and mayo. Really good stuff. My querida got the Crazy Club; also looked to be an excellent sandwich. We both got the halves, and we still got two meals out of them...portions are generous, to say the least, and automatically come with homemade chips and a pickle spear. We added on fries, two drinks, and a cup of French onion soup...I honestly didn't have high expectations for the soup, but it was excellent, even down to the croutons and cheese. On top of the food being great, the prices are sweet - all of that was $20, and we got two meals out of it. I definitely recommend this place!

CAUTION: If you don't like stories of grandparents being accosted, don't read this review. Trust me though, they had it coming. The hoity-toity sub place in Forest Park, IL. The state's unofficial sub sandwich capital. Starship is pricier than most sub shops, but they're ingredients are all top-shelf and the sandwiches are works of art. Also, on some sandwiches they add slice hard-boiled egg, which is so good the first time I had it, I punched my grandma in the solar plexus. All the sandwiches are excellent. Do you like soup? Starship runs 4 or 5 soups every day, with about another 50 varieties sold frozen for reheating at home. The Resurrection Chicken Soup is amazing. It's homemade chicken noodle with jalapenos. I had this soup and had to stomp a mud-hole in grandpa, because it was so good. So in conclusion: Starship Subs: Serving up great soup and sandwiches and old people beat downs since the 70s. EPILOGUE: No grandparents were injured in the review of this restaurant, any real life occurrences are coincidental, but they probably had it coming.

I defiantly enjoyed my visit to Starship. The place does look like an old night club from the outside. hehe Inside... Well... It is kinda ... not ... good. Tables are scratched up, chairs are a lil beat up. There is some star trek and star wars memorabilia in two showcases which are pretty dirty looking.. but don't let the looks scare you away. The soup by far is their best item which they have a huge selection of. They do only have 4 varieties of soup each day, but they have a freezer with frozen soups that you can take home and enjoy and the selection is very appealing. The wife and I had the cream of chicken with rice and it was flavorful, a tad bit salty but probably the best I've had so far .. pieces of chicken in each bite. A+ The sammiches ... we both went for the same sub, the Starship. Ham, turkey, roast beef and cheddar with a thousand island/ranch dressing and a great pickle. The home made chips were very good and we tried the seasoned fries which were good also. So she had the 4 inch sub with soup and chips and a drink (value meal) I had the 6 inch sub with soup, chips and a drink and we split the fries. and it came out to just under $19. Not too bad for the quality of the food, which was exceptional. We had to take home most of our meal since the soup filled us both up. Free Wi-Fi also. Parking - Across the street in a lot with parking meters. A quarter actually gives you an hour!!!!!! Well prolly cuz it's not in the city. der! I put "No" for waiter service, but after you order, the guy did bring the food out to our table. Which was nice. I would eat here again.

Yummmm...an out of this world sandwich at Starship! Had not been here in a few years after an unremarkable first visit. However, the Lanassa (Italian sub) that my husband and I enjoyed yesterday was dynamic! Can't wait for my next visit!

Hmmm. Thought I reviewed this ages ago. Starship Subs. Been coming here over twenty years now. I like just about everything they serve. I go out of my way to grab a nice soup and sandwich from this place. I would have thrown 5 stars out, but I think service and portion sizes have declined in the last five or so years. Still, this is a very good sandwich shop. If you haven't been, you are missing out. I suggest trying either the Crazy Club, Lanasa or Beefeater. My top picks.

  • Padme A.

The best subs and soups around. Blows the doors off Subway, Potbelly and Quiznos and I like Quiznos. The crazy sub is my favorite. I don't know what they do here, but they have the best ingredients. So fresh, so flavorful. BACON. They have the best bacon for a sandwich ever! The soups here are awesome too. The french onion is my favorite. The make soups and sandwiches seasonal, so you have to go back all year round to try them all. I think they have something like 100 to choose from! The only down side, a little pricey, but not as bad as Quiznos.

Sometimes, all you need is a good soup and sandwich- and some cheesy decor. Starship delivers all three in a big way! Thus far, I have never been disappointed by anything I have ordered. The subs are layered with flavor and the meat is piled high. The sub that really caught my attention was the Lanasa, their Italian sub. It had a great selection meats and spices, and blows away anything from a chain sub shop, especially when it comes to portions. The perfect compliment to their subs are their homemade soups. In all honesty, you could make a solid (and quite delicious) meal of the soups alone, but what fun would that be? Hey, if soup is your bag, they do offer a big selection of frozen soups to take home and enjoy or try to pass off as your own creation... They are that good. Moving onto the decor- well, some things you need to see to believe or explain, so I suggest you stop in and see for yourself. Keep in mind that you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, or a sub by its wrapper. Overall, I think this place is worth the trip to experience a very good meal (it has made my list as a regular stop). Will anything they offer change your life forever? Probably not, but you just can't argue with solid, consistency, combined with friendly staff who encourages you to try the soup before you buy. I know some people commented about the price, but I think it's worth every penny. In tough times, isn't that enough?

  • Lindsey C.

I've only had the Crazy Sub, but that's because it's so good. Sharp cheddar cheese, fresh sliced turkey breast, plentiful, thick, crunchy bacon, tomato, lettuce, and a smear of mayo. The prices are fine for the quality. The catering is great too. It's very close to the Madison Street bars, and is a good place to soak up some alcohol. The soup list is downright impressive- I think there's nearly 70 flavors total, many of them available to take home frozen.

How has no one mentioned the milkshakes??? Ahhh ... milkshakes. So delicious. So thick. So not able to be drunk through a straw. My parents have been going to this place since before I was born. I've been frequenting since approximately 1984. I always order the "American" and then sub out Italian meats for the American ones - you know capacola, etc. Hardboiled eggs ... delicious crusty bread. Unreal. I just drooled thinking about it.

  • Molly O.

I love the sandwiches here, but lately I've been unhappy with the soups. Or maybe I should say the service. I called the "soup hotline" on a Sunday, and heard the specials for Friday. Obviously the specials were different, so I had to ask for the current specials and the kid working the phones was very vague about what was available. I ordered the "Tater Skin" soup, after confirming with the kid that there was no meat involved. My sandwich was great, as usual, but there was bacon in the soup and it was therefore inedible to me, as a vegetarian. I love this place, but I wish they were more consistent.

Starship has one of the most tender italian beef I have ever had. The soups are very tasty. You can also purchase frozen soup for later. I enjoy the lamb and barley. I am a true carnivore, I love lamb! The subs are very good as well. Someone mentioned there salads are bad. I cannot comment on salad. Remember I am a carnivore!

Most of the reviewers have it right: hole in the wall from the exterior, creepy on the interior. Sub sandwiches are fine - I don't think there's anything tremendously special about them or the ingredients; the main draw is they're huge. That said, as an Oak Park local, this place has tremendous value because of the soups. We picked up 6 frozen soups for $22 yesterday. The soups are homemade, come in a tremendous variety of flavors, and are hearty enough to be a meal in themselves... some examples include Mexican Chicken Soup, Spicy Chicken Sausage Gumbo, Great Northern Bean, Pizza Soup, Split Pea Soup, and more. All the ingredients are printed on the label. (Sidenote: there is actual food in your food. Not a list of preservatives. Bravo.) They're the perfect size to take with you to work, and only require 9 mins in the microwave to enjoy. The only complaint I have is that there are no nutrition facts to be had about the soups - hard to tell how much salt is added. Today I had Great Northern Bean soup for lunch... it was flavored with bacon and brown sugar and HOLY COW was it good on a nine-degree day. I would eat an entire pot of it if I could. Conclusion: Not worth a trip out of your way for sandwiches alone, but most definitely a destination for frozen take-home soup. [Note to the owners: consider a dining room upgrade.]

Nah...meh. Stay home make your own sandwich, just don't come here. Overrated, big-time let down. Feels like a bad 70s sitcom in there and tastes like one. Stale tasting bread, warm meats and veggies. I'm confused about the good reviews, nostalgia, maybe? Meh, again.

Everything I've had here has, so far, been of high quality. The sandwiches are very good, the soups and chili are great, and they always serve a piece of french bread to dip. Although I used to be a big fan of Star Trek, for some reason I feel a bit uneasy seeing all the fading 90's sci-fi posters and pictures. Perhaps a tweak of their interior design is in order? Also, they sell their own bottled sauces, which is totally neat-o. I've bought the Paprika Sauce, which is good and probably great if I ever eat it warm instead of using it as a dip for carrots.

Went here with my boss (reviewer John C) becuase he told me we had coupons from the Entertainment book. So like slobs we used our "buy 1 menu item, get 2nd free" and went to it. I had the combo (italian suasage and italian beef with cheese on a long roll) and it was up there with the best I've had (and I've had a couple of combo's in my day let me tell ya!). Of course its a messy sandwhich but damn was it worth it. The second item I had was the Italian sub (called some special name but I forget). This was made with fresh deli meats and cheeses and the half that I ate was quite tastey (as Fergi and the Black Eyed Peas would spell it ). I hear the soups are great here (I wanted to get the cream of artichoke heart) but was already feeling like a TOL (tub of lard) from my whole combo and half of the Italian sub. Cool memorabilia from space themed shows is all around the place, mostly from Star Trek (John C did make one Star Trek TV show reference during the lunch conversation that I'm sure started with "Did you see the episode where..." to which I course responded with a "No, I'm sure I didnt". Overall great lunch spot for reasonable/typical price if your in the neighborhood.

From what I've seen so far, this place is decent, but nothing stellar. I'd say it's one step below Captain Nemo's in Chicago (which has better soups and sandwiches). There's nothing objectionable. Just haven't had anything super memorable. They also need some vegetarian options.

    (3)
  • Cindy R.

This is a place you have to visit to understand it. The decor is about as charming as a 70s dentist office, even with the large Star Trek collection as decorations... yet, it's a charming place somehow - the friendly but no nonsense service, Star Trek-themed menu names, good subs, and mostly great soups are consistent. I've had their tuna salad (the "Starfish") and it was quite good. They put a little bit of relish in it, which I don't always like, but they only put in a little so it actually added a bit of flavor without overpowering the salad. For their sandwich sizes you order either a mini, half or full. Most people should order the half, it's a healthy size for a meal. It's worth a visit if you're in the Forest Park area and hungry for subs and/or soup.

Read the reviews on yelp and decided to try this place out since the reviews were all pretty good.... And the reviews did not lie! The diner-esque feel to the restaurant was to be expected since it is kind of a 'hole in the wall' type place. A menu is posted on the wall near the counter where you order, and a white board with the daily specials and soups can be found near there as well. Everyone in my party decided on getting the daily special, which was the turkey grinder and a small bowl of soup. Drinks cost extra, but if you eat in, fountain drinks have free refills. I got the minestrone soup, whereas other people got the chili, and cream of chicken soup with rice. After placing our order, I spent the time waiting for our food looking at all the soups in the fridge, and there had to be at least 30 varieties in one fridge along... and I must admit, they all looked pretty tasty. You can buy those and take them home to heat in the microwave. They brought out our soups first along with a small piece of bread while they finished making our sandwiches. The minestrone was so chock full of veggies and pasta that it looked more like a stew, and it was absolutely fantastic! So flavorful and the small little bowl was almost a meal in itself. When our plates came out with our sandwiches, I couldnt believe the amount of food on it! The sandwich was at least 6 inches long, piled high with turkey, lettuce and tomato, and came with a huge helping of starship chips, which they apparenly make themselves, and a pickle. Sandwich was delicious, yet a little hard to eat since it was open faced (totally forgot what a grinder was until it arrived!) but after eating half the sandwich I was stuffed. For all that food for 3 people it was under $20 and two of us had enough left overs for a lunch the next day. Very friendly staff, delicious food and a menu that would take a long time to exhaust with combinations makes this a place I am looking forward to visiting again!

Great subs (the original Starship is my favorite, followed by the tuna salad sub) and soups. These guys have been here since the 70's. That alone says a lot considering parking is very limited on that stretch of Madison Street. If you're having a party, order one of their satellite's. It's a round sub that is big enough for a crowd. Chock full of good meats and cheeses. I like this place. Usually don't eat it there though. Pick it up and take it home.

it's the soups, mon all 200 or so varieties they offer in frozen tubs we continue to take home, and i'll keep you updated as i reach the end of the list yeah slight number exaggeration but you could get similarly impressed all taste fantastic when me & my wife thaw 'n heat them at home later when we dine there the baked french onion soup, you know the kind w/ guyere (not swiss) cheese melted on top and served w/ pre-buttered roll side, always a perfect prelude to whatever sandwiches we decide on while it shouldn't matter my wife's still a star trek fan and i not

I've been going to Starship for nearly 20 years now and one thing that is consistent at Starship is the quality in their ingredients. If you're a "soup" person, then this is the place for you. Big Paul is one hell of a nice guy with a great staff that knows what they're doing. Catering a party?Starship can make it happen. I don't know how else to say it, I love Starship! Another thing I've noticed is how many regulars go there which tells me people go back over and over because of the great food and service, like me! The decor is cool with all the Star Trek and Star Wars memorabilia. Overall, Starship is a great experience. Call the soup hotline at (708)366-SOUP for the daily special and a list of their soups of the day. Yes, I said SOUPS! Try it, you'll love it.

There was a lot of hype on Yelp about this place. But when we came here we were very disappointed. When somebody puts stale vegetables in their salad they don't deserve more than two stars. I wouldn't recommend this place to anybody.

I use to eat at Starship all the time. My favorite sandwich is the Crazy club a combo of meats with veggie and bacon on hearty bread. Very tasty! Plus I have tried about a dozen soups and they are all delish. Now remember how I said I use to eat there. Yeah use to because the cashier took my money with his gloves on moved the broom out the way with his gloves on and then proceeded to make my sandwich with the same gloves on... GROSS!

Yelp review contributors were extremely helpful with my lunch choice today. I called the restaurant to place an order for pick-up. Had the Meatball Sandwich with Sweet Peppers. Delicious. Don't expect to be hungry until dinner. Being italian i'm very choosy about red sauces. It is spectacular and has great flavour. Don't miss this gem. I am excited for my next meal there and will try the milkshakes.
